Finding Purpose in Your Career: A Life Coach’s Guide to Navigating Every Stage - 16 to 25

Writer: Michi NogamiMichi Nogami

As a life coach, one of the most common challenges I help people navigate is finding purpose in their careers. From high school students exploring future paths to adults looking to make meaningful shifts in their established careers, the quest for purpose is essential. Career fulfillment isn’t just about landing a well-paying job; it’s about aligning your work with your values, passions, and long-term goals. Let’s look at how purpose can shape your career journey at every stage of life, and how you can take steps to find that purpose today.

Exploring and Discovering

For young adults in this age range, career paths often feel overwhelming. You’re flooded with questions: What should I study? What career will make me happy? Should I follow my passion or focus on a stable job? My advice: explore without pressure. This is the time to get curious. Try internships, volunteer work, and part-time jobs that interest you, and use each experience to learn about your strengths and what truly resonates with you.

A practical tip I often give clients in this stage is to focus less on finding one single, “right” path and more on identifying what motivates you. Don’t hesitate to take risks and experiment. Even a bad experience, or one that just didn't work for you, gives you useful information; every step, even if it’s not your “forever” career, will teach you something invaluable about what you want — and don’t want — in a career and your vision for your life.
